Entry Form

2008 State Individual Elementary Chess Championships, March 15, 2008, 9am - 7pm

Oakland Center, Oakland University, Rochester, MI 48309

Please return this form to Mr. Roth no later than Wednesday March 5, 2008.

The 2008 State Individual Tournament will be held at Oakland University. Everyone will be pre-registered, so you need to arrive only by 8:50AM. Approximate travel time is 1 1/2 hours. The site is off Exit 79 from I-75. When I mapped this from my home in E Lansing, Mapquest said to take I-69 to I-75. When I mapped it from an address near Jolly Road, Mapquest said to take I-96 to exit 133, then follow M-59 for 40 miles to I-75, then head north on I-75 to exit 79. The Michigan Chess website does not give an exact address for this site, but I went to the Oakland U. website, and looked at a campus map, and that map appears to match Mapquest. Once you are on Wilson Road (a 2-block road on the campus), it appears to dead end at the Oakland Center. Directions AFTER exiting at exit 79 on I-75 are as follows:
1: From I-75, Take the UNIVERSITY DR exit- EXIT 79- toward ROCHESTER. 0.4 miles Map

2: Turn LEFT onto UNIVERSITY DR. 1.3 miles Map

3: Enter next roundabout and take 2nd exit onto MEADOW BROOK RD. 0.2 miles Map

4: Turn RIGHT onto WILSON BLVD. 0.1 miles Map

There are 2 elementary sections: K-3, and 4th - 5th. There is also a reserve section for beginners and players with limited tournament experience. There are 5 rounds at 2-hour intervals at 9, 11, 1, 3, and 5.  Parents are expected to be on site during this time, unless you make  arrangements for someone to watch your child.  Because many of the games last 1/2 hour or less, the students will need to be occupied during the “down time”. I do not think it is appropriate to just play chess during the down time, because their brains will become over-worked. Bring books, games, etc. Also, if it is a nice day, the kids will likely be outside playing between rounds. However, we don’t want them playing outside too much, because then they will become physically exhausted. Food will be available on site.

As in all tournaments, participation is based on the student’s desire to participate, rather than rigid ability criteria. Especially in the K-3 section, there are lots of beginners.

Players should bring board, set, and clock if they have one. I will bring some extra sets.

The costs for the tournament are as follows (if you played at MSU in February, you owe ONLY the tournament fee, unless your membership is expiring in March):

            Tournament Cost                                                                       15.00 ($25 after 3/7)

US Chess Federation Membership (if not a member or expired)   17.00

Mich. Chess Assn. Membership (if not a member or expired)        5.00

Please return this form to Mr. Roth no later than Wednesday March 5, 2008. Please make checks payable to: Let’s Play Chess.
