Mac OS 7.5 - 9.0 Dialup Setup
Follow these instructions to set up a Mac running OS 7.5 through 9.x.
- First you need to ensure that you have the proper components installed (OS 8.x and 9.x will almost always have these installed already). To do so, click on the Apple (
) button and navigate to Control Panels. Make sure you have Modem, Remote Access (or--in the case of Mac OS 8.1 and earlier--this panel is called PPP) and TCP/IP listed. If you do not have them listed you can install them from your original system CD by inserting it and choosing Custom Install, selecting Network software, and then TCP/IP, Modem, and/or Remote Access/PPP. If you do not have a system CD and do not see these control panels, contact whomever would support your computer.

- First we'll click on the
button and go to Control Panels => TCP/IP.
- In the TCP/IP settings set Connect via to PPP using the arrow box.
- In the Setup portion of the window, make sure the Configure field is set to Using PPP Server.
- In the Name server addr box, enter the following IP addresses:
207.179.70.27
207.179.71.27 - If the field is available and you can enter information into it, in the Additional search domains box, enter: acd.net . When done, your screen should look something like this (will vary by OS version):
- Click the square in the upper left corner to close the TCP/IP settings window. Choose to save the settings when prompted.
- Click on the
menu again and select Control Panels => Modem. You will see something similar to the following window:
- Make sure your settings look like the above screen (if you have a pulse phone line instead of a Tone, select Pulse). You can feel free to set the Sound to Off, however the modem dialing sound can often be an invaluable tool in troubleshooting dialup connection problems.
- Click the square in the upper left corner to close the Modem settings window. Choose to save the settings when prompted.
- Click the
menu again and select Remote Access (or PPP in versions prior to 8.1). - Make sure Registered User is selected.
- In the Name field, enter your username with ACD.net (i.e. doe.john@acd.net).
- In the Password field, enter the password for your account. Please note that passwords are CASE-SENSITIVE, so if you did not specify to us that you would like upper-case letters in your password, then it is lower-case by default.
- If you wish to save your password, check the Save password box.
- In the Number field enter the access number your computer will dial in order to get online. This page is NOT asking for your phone number. For a complete list of ACD.net's dialup access numbers visit http://www.acd.net/numbers.htm. Once you have located an access number and entered it, click Next. **NOTE** ACD.net is not responsible for long distance charges incurred by the customer. Due to continuously changing local calling areas and increasing numbers of local phone carriers, it is the customer's responsibility to verify with their local phone carrier whether or not a given number will be a local call for them. Your settings should look somewhat like this now (may vary by OS version):
- Click on the Options button.
- On the Redialing tab, feel free to set your redial options.
- Click on the Connection tab.
- Make sure Connect automatically when starting TCP/IP applications is checked, as shown below:
- Click OK to exit the options.
- Click the square in the upper left corner to close the Remote Access settings window. Choose to save the settings when prompted.
Your Mac is now configured to get on the internet! You can either open an internet-enabled program (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc), or you can click on the
menu, select Remote Access, then click Connect.
