Marty Somberg has a degree in art from Eastern Michigan University, but his musical roots go back to his early rock'n'roll days in Detroit and California. Somehow, the guitar player who migrated west like thousands of other young musicians underwent a mystical Celtic transformation on the West Coast.
Trading in his Les Paul for a fiddle, he took the next plane for Ireland where he spent many happy nights learning tunes in the traditional style from players young and old. He was especially influenced by the prominent Sligo fiddler of his day, Joe O'Dowd. His style still has a touch of that Sligo lilt. By the late '70's Marty was back in California and a member of a trio called "Knock na Shee" with Jo Allen and Mark Simos. In 1979 they recorded an album "Last Night's Fun" on the Shanachie label.
Later adventures have included a period as a member of the Washington D. C. based "Celtic Thunder", recording sessions with Gray Larson which produced the "Lake Lemon Sessions" cassette release, and several years with the Celtic trio, "Party Of Three."
Marty hosts the traditional music sessions on Sundays at Conor O'Neill's Pub in Ann Arbor. When not playing music he runs a graphic design business in Ann Arbor.
