THE MAGIC
By

Little Girl Walking Slowly by
The little girl walked
slowly through the damp grass towards the woods. It was foggy that morning and
Angie could only see a little way in front of her. It was so quiet she could
hear her boots swishing through the wet grass.
Angie was upset about her life
in this new town. She did not like her new school, or her new teacher. She
missed her old friends and the new kids did not play with her. Her mother and
father were busy and she did not want to bother them with her problems.
As Angie came to a clearing in
the woods, the fog began to lift. She could see a beautiful deer with grand
antlers, standing by a berry patch. He shook his head and flagged his white
tail three times.

Angie And The Deer
This scared Angie and she
was about to run away. She did not know why, but she stayed and watched.
The deer lowered his nose to
the ground and flagged his tail once more.
Angie moved slowly and quietly
closer, almost afraid to breathe. The deer flagged his tail twice more, to let
her know that she would be all right. Now she could see that he was pointing,
with his nose, to a special berry. It was the biggest berry she had ever seen.
The deer shook his head again,
flagged his tail three times, then ate a smaller berry near by. A smile came to
his face. He turned to her. Shook his head. Then flagged his tail three more
times. He pointed his nose to the big berry and stood very still.
"Do you want me to eat
that big berry," asked Angie, in a soft voice?
The deer flagged his tail and
raised his head high.

The Deer Flagged His Tail
Angie slowly picked the berry and took a small bite. It tasted
very good, so she took another bite. As she ate the rest of berry, a smile came
to her face, and she was very happy.
The deer watched her finish the berry. Then, with a flip of his
tail, he disappeared into the woods.

As Angie headed home, the
sun came out and chased away the fog. The dew dried from the grass. Everything
was so warm and wonderful. As she skipped and hopped she sang this little song:
"It's a very good
day,"
"And all is
made right,"
"When from a
magic berry,"
"You take a big
bite."
As Angie entered the kitchen,
her mother and father were sitting at the table.
"Where have you been, so
early this morning," her mother asked?
"I went to the berry patch
in the woods. And there was a beautiful deer. And this big magic berry...
And... And... And..." blurted out
Angie.
"Now slow down," her
mother said, with a little smile.
"Well anyway, the deer
told me to eat the big berry, and then the sun came out and turned everything
wonderful," Angie said, still bubbling.
Her father began to smile too.
"Did the deer scare you," he asked?
"I was a little
scared," said Angie. "But when the deer smiled, I knew I would be all
right."
"Well, You have had a very
interesting outing. You must show me this magic berry patch sometime," her
father said, smiling. "Right now I must go to work. I have a lot to do and
a big problem to solve."
Her mother was still smiling.
"You, Angie, must be off to school. And I have many things to do this
morning also. Then this afternoon I have to meet with your new teacher to see
how you are doing in school."
Angie hugged her mother and
father, and then hurried on her way. She skipped and hopped and sang her little
song, all the way to school:
"It's a very good
day,"
"And all is
made right,"
"When from a
magic berry,"
"You take a big
bite."
That evening, as they sat at
the table for dinner, the smiles were still on their faces.
"That big problem I had at
work, just seemed to have fixed itself," said Angie's father. "I
still had a lot of work to do. But it was much easier. And I even got more done
than I expected. It must have been that everyone was smiling all day."
"That is the way my day
went too," her mother said. "Everyone was so nice to me. Everything
went so smoothly. And when I talked to your teacher, she said that you were
having a very good day. And all your new friends were having a good day
too."
Angie was so happy. "Can
we all go to the magic berry patch tomorrow?"

They got up early the next
morning and walked to the woods.
It was foggy, like the day
before, but there was no deer. The berry patch was still there, but there was
no magic berry.
As they walked back to their
new home, Angie's father hugged her and her mother. He said, "not everyone
can have a magic berry patch. But everyone can have a magic smile."
