True Friends Don't Care ©

There once was a time when the young animals played in the same field, but they did not play together. On this day, something happens that will make them become friends forever.

Bouncer Bunny romped across the field. It was a glorious day with the warm sun shining and a gentle breeze blowing.

As he bounded about the field, Bouncer Bunny sang this little song:

    "I can skip,"
    "And hop,"
    "As I play."
    "I can touch,"
    "The sky,"
    "It's a fun day."

Bouncer Bunny investigated every bush and thicket in the field. He smelled all the flowers and chased every butterfly.

There were a lot of things to do, but it was boring without someone to share the fun with.

"Why wouldn't anyone play with me," Bouncer Bunny thought to himself.

Bouncer Bunny was thinking about his loneliness as he hopped over a low bush and landed right on top of Ricky Raccoon. They tumbled to the ground in a pile of legs and dust.

Both Ricky Raccoon and Bouncer Bunny were furious as they got to their feet and shook off the dust.

"You should look before you leap," shouted Ricky Raccoon.

"Why don't you stick that dumb long tail of yours' up in the air," sassed Bouncer Bunny. "Then I can see where you are."

"That would just improve your aim," snapped Ricky Raccoon.

"I think you're right," Bouncer Bunny snapped back.

"You don't think at all," sneered Ricky Raccoon. "Your brains are as small as your puffy little tail."

"Why should I care if I do land on you," sneered Bouncer Bunny. "You're not a nice fluffy bunny like I am."

"You're just a snobbish long eared bunny with big feet and a little ...." Ricky Raccoon stopped in mid shout. He had caught a familiar sent in the air.

"Here comes Sniffy Skunk," said Ricky Raccoon. "You can smell him from the other side of the field."

"Well I could hear you two all the way from the river," snarled Sniffy Skunk.

"We were just talking," lied Bouncer Bunny.

"You were so loud," continued Sniffy Skunk, "that you could have awakened Pokey Possum."

"You guys with stripes and long tails are all the same," snapped Bouncer Bunny.

"Well, I wear my stripes proudly on my back," shrieked Sniffy Skunk. "I don't drag them around on my tail, like Ricky Raccoon does."

"Your tails are too long," hollered Bouncer Bunny. "That's why you can't sky jump, like I can."

The black mask around Ricky Raccoons eyes grew bigger as he growled and stretched to his full height, on his hind legs.

Sniffy Skunk lifted his tail as if he were going to spray his stinkum.

Bouncer Bunny laid back his long ears and thumped his big feet on the ground to show that he was ready to fight too.

They sprang into the air and came down in a big ball of fur and snarl. They tumbled and rolled, kicked and scratched.

As they toppled down the hill, they dropped over the rocky cliff and sprawled onto a small ledge below.

No one was hurt, but the fall put a quick end to their spat.

They could see the river far below and overhead the limb of a tree, too high for them to reach.

They hollered and yelled for help, but no one could hear them.

This was not a fun day.

Pokey Possum was sunning himself on the big rock, near the sheep pasture. His stomach was full from the big meal he had found under an old log.

"I should go to my favorite tree and hang from a limb by my tail and take a nap," Pokey Possum though to himself. "But this warm sun feels so good. I think I'll take my nap here."

When Pokey Possum awoke, it was dark and the moon was full and bright. He was thirsty after his big meal and the long nap.

Pokey Possum strolled through the field and down the hill, towards the river to get a drink of water.

It was a long slow walk for Pokey Possum, so he had time to think about something that was bothering him. His lack of friends.

He was always being teased about his looks and his strange ways. Pokey Possum knew, that if he were given a chance, the others would understand and like him.

There is a game that Pokey Possum likes to play. It's called playing possum. He lies very still with his eyes closed. You can't even see him breath.

The guys try to make him move by yelling and poking him. But Pokey Possum stays motionless, as if he were dead.

The others think Pokey Possum can't hear them talking. They say mean things about him. They claim that he is dimwitted and has no proper fur. They think that he looks like a big dumb rat.

These nasty things hurt Pokey Possum's feelings. But he tries not to care. He knows that inside he is a nice possum and he lives a good life.

Maybe, someday, the others will get to know the real Pokey Possum and accept him for who he really is.

As Pokey Possum walked past the rocky cliff he heard a woeful sound. He was surprised by what he saw when he looked over the edge.

Down below were Bouncer Bunny, Ricky Raccoon and Sniffy Skunk, sitting on the small ledge.

"Have you found a new game to play," Pokey Possum asked? "Is it something like hide and seek?"

"No," cried Ricky Raccoon. "Can't you see that we are in trouble?"

"We fell over the rocky cliff," said Bouncer Bunny, with tears in his eyes. "And now We can't get back to the top."

"Can you do something to help us," sobbed Sniffy Skunk?

"Let me think about this," said Pokey Possum as he walked out onto the tree limb, to get a better look.

"Are you teasing us," asked Ricky Raccoon.

"No," answered Pokey Possum. "Are you playing with me?"

"This is no game. We're really in trouble," yelled Bouncer Bunny. "We need to get back up to the top, where you are."

"You can't reach this tree limb," continued Pokey Possum. "And there is no one to help you, but me. This is a big worry."

"I think that you understand the problem, now," said Sniffy Skunk.

"What can I do," Pokey Possum thought to himself? "I don't want them to become anymore scared than they already are."

There was quiet for a moment. Then Sniffy Skunk asked, "Are you playing possum again, Pokey Possum?"

"No," said Pokey Possum. "I was thinking how to reach you. My arms are too short."

"I know what I would do," said Ricky Raccoon. "Can you hang by your feet? Then you could reach us."

"No I can't, but I can do something else," Pokey Possum replied.

Pokey Possum wrapped his strong tail around the tree limb, hung down and stretched out as far as he could. Then he took each of them, in his strong arms, and lifted them to safety.

"Thank you so much for saving us," sighed Sniffy Skunk.

"You are a good possum," added Ricky Raccoon. "I think you would be a terrific pal."

"I didn't realize that you were so clever and brave," said Bouncer Bunny. "Please be our friend?"

"I would like that very much," answered Pokey Possum with a grin.

Pokey Possum's new friends were by his side. Bouncer Bunny, Ricky Raccoon and Sniffy Skunk walked slowly so Pokey Possum didn't have to run.

"Tomorrow, let's all come to the field and play together," suggested Sniffy Skunk?

"We can play games together," chimed in Bouncer Bunny.

"I'll ask my parents about games we all can play," offered Pokey Possum. " It will be fun having others to play with."

"Maybe we can play hide and seek," chattered Ricky Raccoon. "That's a good game for the four of us."

"True Friends don't care if you are different than they are," Pokey Possum though to himself. "They just care that you care."

They were all very happy. It was a good feeling to have True Friends.

The end.
